Week 10: Small Wins, Big Momentum
Welcome back to The HayZ Minute. Each week, I share lessons designed to help you build clarity, consistency, and forward momentum. This week’s focus is a simple but often overlooked truth: big momentum is built on small wins.
Most people believe momentum comes from massive breakthroughs — a big promotion, a viral moment, or a major contract. We’re conditioned to wait for the “one big thing” that changes everything. But in reality, momentum is far more often the result of small, consistent actions stacked over time.
I saw this firsthand during my career in pharmaceutical sales. Early on, I believed success meant landing a major physician account quickly. I chased the big win. What actually worked, though, were the smaller, disciplined actions: scheduling daily calls, leaving behind helpful samples, following up with a thoughtful thank-you note. None of those actions felt extraordinary on their own, but over time they built familiarity and trust. Eventually, doctors who once brushed me off began to listen — and those small wins turned into long-term relationships.
The same principle applies in leadership. At the VA, we didn’t reduce appointment wait times from seven days to 4.3 overnight. Progress came from stacking improvements: one scheduling adjustment, one training refinement, one clearer communication loop. Each change seemed minor in isolation, but together they created a measurable breakthrough.
Even as a DJ, I’ve seen how momentum builds in real time. One song doesn’t make a night. It’s the sequence — each track nudging the energy higher until the dance floor is fully alive. That gradual rise is momentum in motion.
Here’s your action step for the week: write down three small wins each day. Send the email you’ve been avoiding. Swap one soda for water. Make the call you’ve been putting off. By the end of the week, you’ll have 21 wins on paper — proof that progress is happening, even if the breakthrough hasn’t arrived yet.
Here’s the secret most people miss: once enough small wins stack up, momentum begins to work for you. Confidence grows. Resistance shrinks. Bigger doors open naturally.
